Jeffery Hen - The Baby Gets a Name

The next day everybody tried to think up a name for the baby. Jeffery Hen, Roo and Bear were already in the hen house when a few more hens entered it, wanting to help out with naming the baby. They sat around the nest and watched closely to see what would make a good name for it. As they were watching it eat they noticed that the chick was stirring up the feed around it like it was drawing some kind of picture.

Jeffery Hen said, "It looks like it's trying to draw a little bowl or nest with its food."

Roo said, "She'll grow up and be an artist."

Patricia Hen said, "Looks to me like she's tracing something from underneath the food."

Bear said, "Trace e."

Everybody in the house yelled, "TRACI!"

Roo said, "Traci?"

Jeffery Hen said, "Yes, Traci!"

Roo said, "Traci it is!"

Jeffery Hen said, "I want to give her a middle name like Miranda so I can say I named it after you Roo."

Roo said, "That's fine with me."

Jeffery Hen said, "Since Miranda is somewhat spelled like Panda, we'll nickname her Panda."

Patricia Hen said, "Traci Miranda that's a pretty name." All of the other hens agreed with her. When they all left the hen house they told everybody what the baby's name was.

When the baby got finished eating, it want to start playing around the nest. It started to remove the straw in the nest from one place to another. It sure was making a big mess of everything in the nest.

Jeffery Hen - The Baby Sleeps All Day

After the baby hatched it went right to sleep. It slept all the rest of the day. Jeffery Hen, Roo and Bear slept on the perch. It was such a hot day that they were worried about the chick getting too hot.

The very next day, when the roosters came back from their hunt, Jeffery Hen made sure the baby was all right before she when outside. While she was outside eating her breakfast, Roo saw her and flew out of the tree to join her and Bear. She wanted Roo to help her pick up some real small seeds to feed the baby when it got hungry. They picked up as much as they could and went back into the hen house.

They put the seeds they have collected beside the chick. Patricia Hen came in to see the baby. She said, "Is it a boy or a girl?"

Jeffery Hen said, "We still haven't found out yet."

Another hen came into the hen house wanting to know the same thing. She said, "All chicks sleep exactly 24 hours when they wake up after breaking out of their shell."

Jeffery Hen said, "That will be somewhere about the time the sun starts to go down. Isn't that about the time you got married yesterday, Patricia Hen?"

Patricia Hen said, "Yes it was."

That afternoon the baby finally woke up and it started eating right away.

Jeffery Hen wanted to know if it was a boy or a girl so she gently picked it up to see.  Jeffery Hen noticed right away that it was a girl. She got all excited and started to cluck real loud. "It's a girl!" crowed Jeffery Hen.

A few hens that were standing near the hen house heard her and went to watch the baby play. Patricia Hen was also nearby, they came in and asked what she was planning on naming the baby.

Jeffery Hen said, "I have to talk it over with Roo."

Roo just then entered the hen house. He said, "I saw all of these hens come in and got worried. What's going on here?"

Jeffery Hen said, "The baby is a girl."

Roo said, "A girl?"

Jeffery Hen said, "Yes, Roo, a girl."

Roo said, "Now, I am the proud father of both a son and daughter."

Jeffery Hen said, "Yes, Roo, you are."

Roo said, "That's just how I like it."

Just then Bear entered the hen house. Roo and Jeffery Hen told him that he had a sister now. Bear said, "What are we going to name her?"

The hen house was a little bit crowded with six chickens in it, so everybody went outside to discuss it. They still couldn't think up a name yet, so they decided to put it off for awhile.

Jeffery Hen - Her Egg Cracks

It was a real hot summer day, Jeffery Hen was still sitting on her egg. While she was sitting on her nest Bear came in to give her a message that a couple in the area was going to get married this morning and they wanted her to attend the wedding. The couple was Mike Stone and Patricia Hen Loon.

Jeffery Hen checked her egg and sees no crack in it. She decided she would go to the wedding. Outside the hen house she noticed a bunch of chickens gathering around. Jeffery Hen sees that she can stand close by the hen house and watch the ceremony and keep an eye on her egg both.

When the wedding was over the happy couple moved into an empty hen house across the other side of the picking ground. "What a fine couple they make," thought Jeffery Hen.

When she returned to her nest she noticed there was a small crack in it. She picked it up and she sees a very small egg-tooth picking at it. She was so excited that she called for Roo. "Roo!" she said, "our egg is hatching!"

Roo got upon the hen house and announced the hatching of the egg. The happy couple that just got married wanted to see it the most. The hen house was full of chickens wanting to watch the egg hatch.

Patricia Hen said, "I can't wait to start having a family!"

Mike said, "It will have to take time."

The couple watched the whole entire time the egg was cracking. The egg was cracking very slowly, one of the other hens said that it was the slowest egg to get open she had ever seen.

The chick finally broke out of the eggshell. The happy couple couldn't believe their eyes. The chick just shook off the remaining parts of the eggshell, laid down in the nest and fell asleep.

Jeffery Hen was so excited that she is now a mother and she can go around bragging about her baby. She didn't know if the baby was a boy or a girl. All the hens wanted to know what sex it was.

Roo said, "We will let you all know shortly; but right now let the baby sleep."

The newly married couple couldn't take their eyes off it. They knew they had to leave sometime so they decided to go home. Jeffery Hen invited them to come back over tomorrow, she said, "We should know then what it is."

When all of the chickens left the hen house, Jeffery Hen and Roo still hadn't decided on what to name the baby. Roo said, "We'll name it right after we find out whether it's a boy or a girl." Jeffery Hen agreed with him.
