My Summer Vacation by Jeff

Several years ago Emily wrote about her summer vacation in Kentucky so I thought I would do that too.
______________________

Clyde and Jennie took us to see some of the sights in Pikeville.  We got to walk across a swinging bridge.  I haven't done that in years.  Clyde made it swing real big but he couldn't shake me off.

_______________

We saw several of the decorated bears around downtown Pikeville.  This one is called Astro Bear.

_______________

We went to the Heritage Museum where we were attacked by Indians.  There was "Chief Sitting-Around Bull".

_______________

The medicine man "Smiling Turtle Shell" and his squaw "Running Mouth" were there too.

 _______________

We ate really good while we were in Kentucky.  We always do when Aunt Jennie is around.

 _______________

That night we did some old Kentucky rituals that we like whenever Aunt Jennie is around.

_______________

One day Clyde took us to a graveyard and told us The Story of Octavia Hatcher.  Clyde has strange ideas of what a "fun thing to do" is.

_______________

Jennie noticed some wings painted on the wall of a building downtown and said "Let's get your picture in front of the angel wings."  I'm not sure what kind of angel those wings belong on.

_______________

On my last day there we finally got to go see my Uncle Willie and his family.  Lots of my cousins were there too.  We had soup beans for dinner.  No trip to Kentucky is complete without some soup beans.  Clyde ate a lot more than me.

And that's what I did on my summer vacation.

I Found the Doll

Jeffery called and told me that they were six minutes away from my home. Quick as I hung up the phone the Barbie doll I was planning on giving her crossed my mind. I looked all over for it. I thought the doll box had the famous picture on the inside of the box. It was on the back of the box. I looked at this red box at least a dozen times while they were here.

While I was watching Jeopardy I thought I would look at the red box again. I turned it around and there was the picture. I said, "No wonder I couldn't find it." The doll is a 1994 Barbie Doll edition of Peppermint Princess.

Well, Jeffery, next time I see you I will have it ready for you.

Still Running

Today I ran across the old blue 1989 Ford pickup truck that Dad drove for years before he gave it to me.  I drove it several more years and sold it a few months ago to a fellow who wanted it for his grandson.  Saw it this afternoon in the parking lot at McDonald's.

It is still running and on the road.  The rust is trying to claim it but it still looks pretty much the way it did when I sold it.  The biggest differences I could see were the new toolbox and the TRUMP 2020 sticker in the rear window.

That wasn't there when I sold it.

I suspect Dad would be happy to see it there.

Happy 30th Wedding Anniversary Michelle and Jim

I remember when Michelle got married on August 5, 1989, I told her to tell Jim he isn't just becoming a husband, he also is going to become an uncle to about ten.

When we got home I asked Shawn whose baby was he? He said, "Maw's."

I said, "Shawn, Maw gave her baby away."

Mother said, "I did not give my baby away!"

I said, "What did you do today if you didn't give her away?"

Mother said, "Not the way you said it, I didn't give her away."

Resurrection Lilies

Four or five years ago we brought home a small root from the Resurrection Lilies that Mom had growing at the Mt Sterling house.  We planted it among some other flowers in our yard.   I think this is the first time I have seen it bloom.

Florida Girls

A promo for a new show on Pop-TV caught our attention today.

I looked over at Jennie when it ended and said, "Oh my Lord!  They've made a movie about Jeffery's girls."

Jennie laughed and said, "I knew you were going to say that about the Guinea Girls."

Jennie's Retired

In case you haven't heard...Jennie has hung up her nameplate for good.  She retired at the end of June.

This means there will be a few changes that friends and family may notice.
  1. She will be available for many more spur-of-the-minute shopping trips.  The bigger the Mall or Outlet Shops, the better.
  2. Visits to friends and family are no longer confined to the weekends.  We could drop in any day of the week.
  3. She is available for babysitting duty at all times.  The younger the child the better.  Rates are negotiable but Clyde has set a limit of $7.50 that she can pay you to let her watch your child.
In related news, Clyde will probably be looking for a job soon.

Crystal Mountain Gondolas

On our recent trip to Washington to visit the boys, Bryan took Jennie and me to Crystal Mountain.  There is a ski resort there with a gondola ride that takes you to the top of the mountain.  On a clear day, there's a great view of Mt. Rainier.

We got our tickets, hopped on one of the gondolas and headed up the mountain.

After we had ridden a few thousand feet up the mountain and were several hundred feet in the air, I got to wondering...

"Where is the BIG RED BUTTON you push to summon the Mountain Rescue Team with the helicopters and the St. Bernards?"

"Where are the parachutes, if we have to bail out of this thing?"

"Is there a rope ladder or something we can climb down?"

As usual, my stomach wouldn't be ignored for long. "Where is the Seven Day Supply of Emergency Food Rations if we get stranded up here?"

A quick examination of the interior of the gondola revealed none of those things.  There was a sign on one wall.  It gave a phone number to call "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY".  Not very comforting.  It didn't help that the sign continued, "If no answer: call 911."

There was some more gibberish about car numbers and tower numbers and the sign ended with "...climbers left side."  CLIMBER?  Who's climbing? I'm not climbing up or down or out of anything here.

White knuckles were displayed for much of the ride.  Holly was the only one who wasn't nervous.

We eventually reached the top of the mountain and set foot on solid ground again.

The views from the top of the mountain were pretty amazing.  We even got an almost clear shot of Mt Rainier while we were up there.

We hiked around the top of the mountain enjoying the scenery for a while before the realization struck me, the only way back down the mountain was to climb in that gondola death-trap again.

Clyde's Fathers Day

I reported on Jennie's Mothers Day so I guess I need to review my Father's Day.

From Matt, I got an Amazon gift card, a wallet and a couple of shirts (that I'm sure Jennie picked out.)

From Bryan, I got a Google Play gift card and the promise of a place to sleep when Jennie and I go to Seattle in a few weeks.

Erik didn't write a poem for me.  Not enough words rhyme with "Redneck".  He did call and say that he and Veronica had signed me up for one of those " ______ of the Month" clubs.  He didn't reveal what so it'll be a surprise when it arrives. I'm hoping it's something like "Lazagna of the Month" but it'll probably be more like the "Mustache Wax of the Month Club."

Matt also got me a card that gave me a good laugh...

He thought I laughed a little too hard.  I can't figure out who he got his sense of humor from.

Happy Father's Day Up in Heaven

I can't help but remember the good things about you.  I am trying my best to forget the bad things. I know you were too old fashion. You didn't know a lot about keeping up with the times. When you went to school, you got to go barefooted and very dirty but so did all of the other children. You only had to go to school just seven months a year, cause that was all there was. You only went to sixth grade. You told me when you went to school you didn't have to study for a test and you didn't have any homework assignments to do.

You couldn't understand how it was like to have to go to school nine months a year. You couldn't understand that we had to go to school with shoes on our feet and dressed without big tears, big stains, and bad smells. If we did we were sent home. You didn't seem to know if we didn't go to school every day the teachers will fuss about it and you will have to pay fines for it. You also couldn't understand what it was like to have to wait in a bus line every morning and every evening; cause you got to walk to school.

I have to admit you did keep us all in school supplies and we always had lunch money.  I always wished I had good learning abilities. I would have behaved a lot better. I was so worried that I would fail another year in school.

I love you, Daddy. I do miss you. I tried my best to see to it you lived past ninety and you did. I tried to see to it that you had it good the last half of your marriage to mother. I felt like I did. I did my best to give you flowers while you lived. Thanks for keeping me with a car when I needed it and a lot of other things.

Memorial Day in the Rear View Mirror

Jennie complains each Memorial Day that every photo we take at her family's cemetery shows her bending over, working on the decorations.  She doesn't think that is a flattering pose.

Just to set the record straight, I found one photo of her from 2007 where she is not bending over...yet.

Cameron's Photo Timeline

Crystal posted Cameron's School Photo Record to Instagram today...

This is a neat idea and sure triggers a lot of memories.

Somehow it seems just a bit too formal for me though, too cleaned up, too posed.  This just isn't the Cameron I remember.  The little stinker I remember looks more like this...

CONGRATULATIONS on your graduation Cameron!

Cemetery Wild Flowers

Jennie, Matt and I went to the Ford's Branch Cemetery this weekend to begin preparing for Memorial Day.  The grave sites of Mom's Cousin Laurla and her children were covered with little yellow wildflowers.

They are so pretty it almost seems a shame to mow them.

Jennie's Mother's Day

Jennie had a memorable Mother's Day yesterday.

From Bryan, she received a nice card and a pair of pajamas.

From Erik, she got an original, handwritten and heartwarming poem.

From Matt, she got a card, a buffet dinner at Peking and a special gift... he gave her a big hug instead of the usual pat-on-the-back she has gotten in years past.

(No photos of the hug were allowed.)

___________________________________________

I think there are some "StalkerClan Lessons" for all the Stalker, Potter, Coffey, Ratliff, Schell and other kids here:

  • First, pajamas are always a great gift for Mom.  When she goes to bed and when she wakes up, she will be reminded of you.
  • Secondly, anything from the heart will be cherished by her.  It doesn't have to rhyme, but it's especially nice when it does.
  • Finally, hug your Mom every chance you get.  The day will come when you can't hug her anymore, and that will really hurt.  Believe me, I know.

My First Mother's Day Without My Mommy

I have to admit I miss going to Pikeville and other places with her. I remember we used a lot of sayings like "Kill two birds with one stone". Everywhere we went we tried to get several things done at once. For example, every time we would go to Pikeville we went on Thursday,  'cause that was when Gibson's had their double coupon sale day. We always put our doctor appointments and everything else on that day.

The first place we mostly stopped was at Reynold's Market, sometimes Sears or Piggy Wiggy's, Rite Aid, Kroger's, Dollar General, or JC Penney's. On the way back home we would stop at Wal-Mart, Winn Dixie and sometimes Staples. We would stop at whatever restaurant I have coupons that say BOGOF, which was mostly McDonald's. If we happen to go on a Tuesday, we always stopped at Domino's to get the Two for Tuesday. If I didn't have any coupons we always ate at Wendy's using her ten percent card. After that, we would stop at Food City and then go home.

Another saying we kept was "A penny saved is a penny earned". We carpooled, used coupons, sales papers, rebates and refund offers. Together we saved on gasoline and electric.

Another saying "Two heads are better than one". What one liked to do better got to do it. She liked to cook better than bargain shopping. I liked to bargain shop instead of cooking.

I remember sending her a card and she called me and said, "Why didn't you say, 'I love you Mommy' or something like that." The last cards I send her I always remembered to put that on them.

The last time I heard her voice was on June 27. I was watching Wheel of Fortune. I didn't know it was going to be my last. I am sorry I could say no more than I did, but I did say "I love you, Mommy."

Riley's Restaurant

I remember the Com-Care took up on a tour. We ate at Riley's. The group had to stand in line to get their order. When I got my stuff I notice that the back read something like, "Buy a drink and a fries get the sandwich free." I passed it to the next person and told him to pass his to the next person. I told the caseworker what I was doing and would she keep it up for me. I also told her I would like to have the last one.

When everybody got their meals and we were all sitting there eating. The caseworker brought me the last receipt. I ask her how many got a free sandwich? If I remember correctly, she said about six or seven. I felt like I did my good deed for the day. When we got finished eating I think, if I remember correctly, I ordered myself another meal to take home using that coupon.

Remembering Mother for her 94th birthday

I remember getting a $20 rebate check in the mail one day. I am guessing it was from that paint Dad got up at Maloney's. Mother said, "Sherry, give me that check and let me use it to buy the boys their clothes."

I said, "What are you talking about I use these checks to buy my newspapers, postage stamps and envelops." It was 1983 and Carlos was going to be in first grade. I thought up an idea. I went over to the house and Mother and Dad was sitting on the porch. I said, "Mother, I would like to make a deal with you if you don't care to make a deal."

She said, "What kind of a deal are you wanting to make?"

I said, "I will keep you in wash powders, soap, shampoos, and such stuff as that if I have it in exchange that you will buy my boys all of their clothes." Dad got very happy with the deal.

Mom on her Birthday in 2004

I took it Mother will agree with the deal. I started taking products over to the house and putting in the basement. I got Michelle to help me. I told Michelle I made a deal with Mother if I kept her in products if I have them in exchange she will buy the boys all of their clothes. Michelle said, "Did she say she will do it."

I said, "She said she will think about it. When she sees how much stuff she is getting I am pretty sure she will agree to it. She has been buying them their clothes anyway."

As time went by my food stamps started piling up on me. Mother, and I think Michelle and the boys was with us, went to Kroger's. I said to Mother before we got out of the car, "Mother, I would like to make another deal with you. I will buy all of the groceries till I run out of food stamps and you take over in exchange that when you cook you cook enough for all of us." We went into Kroger's and I paid for all of the groceries.

I don't remember when I made this deal with mother. I told her because my children wanted to stay over at her house instead of over the trailer with me, I would come over every day to make up all of the beds and wash up all of the dishes and do a few other chores.

I remember Mother and I went to Maloney's. I am guessing this was about around 1986. I remember Shawn was in school. I went back-to-school shopping and purchased a whole year's supply of paper, pencils, and crayons for the boys. Went I got back home. Dad was sitting in his chair. He watched me fill the desk drawers full of school supplies. I could tell he didn't know what to think. I also purchased ten packages of underwear and socks. I said, "Mother, I bought the boys ten packages of underwear and socks."

She said, "Why so many?

I said, "They were on sale for $5 a package regular $8. I bought ten 'cause I had ten one dollar coupons and I also had two refund offers saying $5 off of five."

She said, "But."

I said, "Mother, you don't understand."

She said, "What is it that I don't understand."

I said, "You said they wore size 8."

She said, "But."

I said, "I only bought one package of size 8. These two packages are size 10 and these two are size 12. These two packages are short socks and these two packages are longs socks."

She said, "You only bought one package of size 8?"

I said, "What does this here say on the package."

She read, "Two free pairs inside."

All ten packages have two pairs in them. That is like getting over 13 packages for the price of ten. I put all of the stuff back into the bags and handed both bags to her and said, "Take all of this and put them up, that might be a three years supply there." The way I figured it out that is $3 per boy per year for underwear and socks. That is $110 worth of stuff including sales tax I got for $33. I think this is the last time I purchased the boys any clothes. Mother and I were at the bank when I showed her the two checks I got from the purchasing of the ten packages of underwear and socks.

The Coffee Stackage

I remember back when I use to do a lot of couponing, I had a big stock of coffee in that red store building.

I remember that I had the biggest pile of 50c off of any size of coffee. The stores back them sold a lot of little jars of coffee for 50c. The stores let me have the jars of coffee free for the coupons. I also purchased a lot of the 8-ounce jars of coffee when they were on sale using either 75c or dollar coupons. I remember I had a stock of 19 jars of the eight ounces of the instant coffee and a countless number of the one-ounce jars. I also had about five big cans of the ground coffee.

There came a big dry spell in central American. It destroyed the coffee plantations. Coffee prices went up real high. I did not buy any coffee during this time period. We all relied on the coffee stock I had in the store building. When I got down to my last jar of instant coffee. Coffee prices started going down again. I said to myself, "I know now how much coffee we use in a one period time. I wonder how much money I saved the family."

The Purple Dog

I remember visiting Joe and Wanda one time. While I was there Wanda was putting some kind of medicine on this white dog of theirs. If I remember correctly it had some kind of skin infection. When Wanda got finished putting the medicine all over the dog, the dog looked purple.

I was with Dad the next day. We were going by Joe's. Dad yelled, "Who painted that dog purple." I liked to died laughing.

Causby Bailey

Our Great-grandmother Cosby Bailey passed away on February 5th in 1915.  After resting for 100 years in the little hillside cemetery on Jessee's Branch, her grave was recently moved to the Dow Brooks Cemetery.

I have added this info to the page about her on the Diggin' Up Bones website.

A Rax's Memory

I remember Mother going to Clyde's to spend the day. I don't know if Dad was with them or not.

I gave her two Rax coupons to buy their lunch. One of the coupons read getting so much off a salad, limit two. The other one said, "Uncle Al, 99¢ each, limit four." I told mother about the two limits on each of the coupons.

When she got home she told me that they purchased four Uncle Als and two salads using both coupons to the limit.

Dad's Old Shotgun

(This is a follow-up to both Jeffery's post about the items she has that belonged to Dad and the post yesterday about how time is flying too fast.)

I have Dad's old Nitro Hunter 16 gauge shotgun.  It is a single barrel, breech-loader that was manufactured sometime around 1910.  Dad told me he got it from his Uncle Dow Chaney when he was just a teenager.  Dad said he killed his first squirrel with it, and that Uncle Teet killed his last squirrel with it.  Not long before Teet passed away he and Dad went hunting on Biggs Branch and Teet used this 16 gauge because it was lighter and easier to carry than his 12 gauge pump.
Dad's Uncle Dow was quite a character.  He fought in the Spanish-American War and often spoke about Teddy Roosevelt and the battle at San Juan Hill.

He also worked for Devil Anse Hatfield during the famous feud.  He and "Uncle Bob Fraley" stood guard at Devil Anse's home.  They were stationed on the second-floor porch where they kept watch for any McCoy's that might come after Devil Anse or any of his clan.  I'm pretty sure Dad's shotgun was manufactured too late to have been used during the feud though.
_________________________________________

Now I wouldn't sell Dad's shotgun for any amount of money. It's as precious to me as Dad's dinner bucket is to Jeffery.  I would, however, be willing to loan it to Jevon if he needs it.  Maybe until Caitlyn turns 30 or 35 years old.

Time's Flying Much Too Fast

It's been a long time since I've been to Florida to see my little buddy, Caitlyn.  I was there not long after she was born...

______________________________________________________________________

And I visited a few times with Dad when she was just a toddler.  Actually, this is kinda how I still picture her in my mind...

______________________________________________________________________

It's been a while since my last visit, and I can accept the fact that she isn't a toddler anymore...

______________________________________________________________________

But THIS I just can't accept...

This can't be happening already! What have you all done with my little buddy?

Oh, I bet Jevon is having an even harder time dealing with this than I am.

Happy Birthday Dad

We may not be able to see you, but we still feel your presence. The memories of you are so many and they flood my mind and make me miss those days.

The lunch bucket you brought home each day that almost always had something left in it for us kids, a cake, a pie or maybe a candy bar left for us to try and split into equal pieces.   We always looked forward to what might be in that lunch box.

The cup you used for the soap you would brush on your face and the razor you used to shave.  I still remember sitting on the sink watching you as you shaved.

The coat you wore when it was cold. You were hot natured and never wore a heavy coat.  A light coat would do.

How many times did you say, “Bring me a cup of coffee.”  I don’t know how many times, but it was many… and a sandwich would be next on your list of things for us to bring you.  You always said you got the a** end of the tomato and you couldn’t figure out why.  I think we all knew from watching you, you didn’t waste anything.  You ate whatever was put on the table.

The cup in the picture is a measuring cup we had when we were young and several times I tried to bring you coffee in it.  You always said the same thing.  “I can’t drink coffee out of that cup, it won’t cool down.”  Who knew the Yeti cup would be so famous.”

And then there is the famous trailer you and Bun Buns made. We all know the story about how it took you so long to make it because you had to wait for Shawn to get home from school to help you build it.  The one he hit his finger with the hammer and had to go have Mama pray for him.

I have the four-wheeler you rode the grandchildren on, and I have fixed it up, and now I ride my grandchildren on it, they love that four-wheeler.  I do too.

The picture only shows a few of the physical things I still have to remind me of you.  But The truth is, I don’t have to have them to remember you,  I remember like it was yesterday and I long to see you.  I miss you so much.  Your stories are still told when we get together, and we still laugh as though it is the first time we ever heard them.

You may not have had a college degree, but you had a degree in the hard knocks of life.  Your life was so hard as a child. I can hardly see how you turned out as good as you did.  You loved your family.  You weren’t perfect, but you sure did love us.  The older I get the more I realize just how much.

I know I will see you again someday.  I know you are with others I long to see.  That gives me great hope of a better day.

Memories of Dad on his 94th Birthday

I remember getting Michelle to go to Velocity Market to get some items. When she got to the store, instead of going picking out the items that were on sale, she when back into the store and got the items that weren't on sale. When she got home we got into a racket over it. Dad said, "From now on you give Sherry the money and let her go and get it."

Mother and I went to Maloney's.  While I was up there I looked around in the store and I saw Dad there. He had a shopping cart with a lot of paint and other stuff in it. I said, "Dad, I can get you ten percent off your paint and stuff. Let me show you how."
He said, "No, I am going to give you the money and you go and get it." If I remember correctly he gave me a $100.

When I got to the counter there were other people in front of me. When it finally came to my turn, Dad and Mother, holding Shawn, was near the door waiting and watching me. If I remember correctly, all of the stuff came to $112. I used a coupon that took a dollar off and the rain check took $12 off. The $100 cover it. When I got finished Dad took the shopping cart and emptied the paint and stuff into his truck.
