Strawberry Days

We had a great time at Strawberry Days. Sorry so many of you missed out on it. The weather was perfect and, of course, the surroundings serene. Jim and Michelle have a beautiful place.

Jim and Michelles Place

We sat in the swings on the front porch with Jeff and Randy on Sunday morning. It was just wonderful.

View from the Front porch

They have a fabulous new grill on the back patio. The burgers were great. They even have a new fangled screen door that works like a window blind. I had never seen anything like it. Now I have to have one.

Shawn and Jennifer caught “Strawberry Fever” and picked everything that looked like it might even be thinking about turning red. We made jam until midnight Saturday night. Then Jennifer and the guys went night fishing. I got up Sunday Morning, worn out, but Shawn and Jennifer were ready to get at it again. When I left they were having another cookout (for Wanda’s Birthday) and planning to get back to the patch.

We really enjoyed getting to know Jennifer a little better. She is really nice. She and Shawn seem to have a lot in common. I think she will be able to withstand the stress of a StalkerClan lifestyle. She fit in well with us.

Thanks, Jim and Michelle for your hospitality!

Thanks, Oliver for the strawberries!

Happy Birthday Wanda!

They're Here !

They're here, finally!  We've worried about them ever since we heard they were leaving Florida yesterday afternoon.   Would they arrive OK?  Their safety never left our thoughts.

We couldn't seem to get a cell phone call through to check on them as often as we would have liked.  The uncertainty was the toughest part of the waiting.  Were they still alright?  Would they make it here?  What if there was car trouble ?  Holiday traffic is always the worst.   So many things could go wrong.

We really got scared when we heard they were stopping in Laurel County.  We know about Laurel County, we watch WYMT.  Their lead story every night is about some crazy happening in Laurel County.   That doesn't surprise us 'cause we know a few people who live in Laurel County.  We could do nothing but pace nervously while we awaited word they had made it through the badlands of Laurel County.

Finally the word came, they were leaving Laurel County and would be here in a couple of hours.  Those two hours seemed to drag on and on, forever.  We watched the road to see if we could catch a glimpse of them coming around the bend.    They couldn't get here quick enough for us.

They finally arrived and it was worth every anxious moment.  Our patience was rewarded at last.  Yes, the blueberries got here safely and they are delicious!  Some of the biggest ones I've ever seen.

Oh yeah, Jeff and Randy got here OK too.

Happy 1,000th Birthday !

Would you all believe Dad will turn 1,000 months old this May 22.?

On May 22, 1933 he turned 100, he was one of the main bread keepers of the family and he also had to go to school. He was eight years and four months old. Back then there was only seven months of school a year not nine. He had plenty of time to garden. He also got to go to school barefoot, dirty and looking a sight just like everybody else. That sure saved a lot of washing clothes, and cleaning up and looking nice.

On September 22, 1942 he turned 200, during this period of time they were building the railroad that when to the mines that he later worked as a coal miner in for over thirty years. He was sixteen years and eight months old.

On January 22, 1950, he turned 300, he got married and was the proud husband and dad to a fine baby boy. He was twenty-five years of age, Happy Birthday!

On May 22, 1958, he is 400, he is now the proud dad to three girls and a boy! During this time we were still living in the little brown house, but he was building on our future white house, which we moved into that following fall. He was thirty-three years and four months old.

On September 22, 1966 at age 500, he is now the proud dad of a five day old baby. The house was getting crowded. Four children in school. The work more then doubled for us girls. He was forty-one years and eight months old. (Guess what, Michelle is exactly half his age now.)

On January 22, 1975, at 600, he is now a father-in-law. He has three children married. He is also a grandfather. He is fifty years of age, Happy Birthday!

On May 22, 1983, at 700, he is now the proud grandfather to eight grandchildren. He also is retired from the mines. He is fifty-eight years and four months old.

On September 22, 1991, at 800, he is now the proud grandfather to ten grandchildren. During this year he suffered the deaths of his brother Teet and sister Thelma. He is sixty-six years and eight months old.

On January 22, 2000, at 900 he is now the proud grandfather to twelve. Later in this year he will become a great grandfather. He is seventy-five years of age. Happy Birthday.

But today he turns 1,000 months old!  He will be married for sixty years this November! He still has all five of his children and all twelve of his grandchildren!  He also has six great-grandchildren. Sadly, he no longer has any of his immediate family left, he is the last one living for the last five years. Today he is eighty-three years and four months of age.

2000?

Happy 1,000th month birthday, Dad

Haircut Hell

Traci's Version:

I was at home and depressed when Amber called, "You have to come out to the lake for a few minutes at least. I have a job for you."

I saw money in my mind and asked her what kind of job it was. I couldn't have been more surprised nor could I have been more overjoyed when she answered, "Jevon needs a hair cut."

I think it had to be the best hour of my life. Between being inexperienced, and Amber picking on him, I laughed my freaking butt off.!

MOM, where are the pictures?

Jeffery's Version:

As for the hair cut incident...it was a HOOT to watch.

Poor Jevon would get up every once in a while, look in the mirror and grimace, come back and sit down, and tell Traci where she had messed up.  She would just grin and mess up some more.

Cheap haircuts are 'H-E-Double-L'.

Oh, I almost forgot.  While Traci was cutting his hair, Amber would go over with another attachment and act as though  Traci had slipped and cut too deep on his scalp.  It was hysterical to watch.  He had no idea that Amber was doing it.  He would get so upset each time.

What we do in the name of fun around here. Go figure!

Jevon's Version:

)(&* Amber.

^% )(&  %$ Traci  (*&(*   &%(* (*$   %$%# get you for this.

^*(^%  Jeff,  stick that #$^*$^*) camera ^$%## (*^&$ sun don't shine.

Wedding Plans

Michelle called me today and asked that I put a picture of Shawn and Jennifer on the StalkerClan with an announcement that they are engaged and planning an October wedding.  She sent me this photo:

Wedding Bells in October

It sounded to me like Michelle is going to be the wedding planner.   As usual she was talking a mile a minute but I think I heard her say:

    • Ted and Jim are going to be the groomsmen.
    • Michelle and Luci will be bridesmaids.
    • Seating arrangements will be hard to figure out.  With Shawn's five mothers, that's five mothers-in-law for Jennifer, where do they all sit?
    • To feed the whole StalkerClan the wedding reception is going to cost a fortune.
    • Sherry's first thought was, "When am I going to be a grandma?"

All I can say is...

"Congratulations Shawn and Good Luck Jennifer!"

Flower Gardeners

This story appears in today's Appalachian News-Express...

Andersons take pleasure in gardening

NANCY M. GOSS EVERYDAY LIVING EDITOR

Jimmies Creek — Becky and Charlie Anderson have a beautiful yard with five or six different garden spots.

“He started out planting,” Becky says, “and then it got out of control and he got me into it. We started out with a little island and slowly we got more plants and expanded out.”

From the front of the house to the upper end, you’ll see creeping Jenny, jessamine, double orange poppy, red, pink and fushia cheddar pinks, dianthus, cheddar pink, viburnum  “snowball”, lady’s mantle, purple iris, allium, hostas, day lilies, and dwarf coreopsis.

Pointing to a small plot of turned soil with several green plants, Charlie said, “This is my baby. This is a bog garden ... something new I’ve started. There are two carnivorous plants here — the Venus fly trap and the pitcher plant.”

At the upper end of the yard is a contoured plot of garden space the Andersons have named the Plant Cemetery.  “If we had a plant we didn’t want or didn’t have room for, we’d set it up here,” Charlie explained. “We don’t throw plants away.” Growing beautifully in the cemetery are a cypress tree, snowball bush, lady’s mantle, azaleas, hostas, day lilies and others.

Beyond this plot, nestled along the hillside, is a wooden porch swing where Becky and Charlie enjoy the peace and quiet of a spring evening or rest when they’ve been working hard in the yard.

The Andersons married in 1974 and have two children, Rebecca Gray and Chuck Anderson, and three grandchildren.

Charlie was born and raised on Jimmies Creek and the house where he and Becky live stands on the spot where the old homeplace once sat. He went to first grade at Harless Creek Elementary, then attended Elkhorn City Elementary, Elkhorn City High School, and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University. He is retired from Arison Insurance of Pikeville.

Becky grew up in Strawberry Plains, Tenn., and graduated from Rush Strong High School. She joined the U.S. Army after high school, serving from 1966 to 1969, and is an active member of Johns Creek DAV Chapter #166. She worked several years at Wal-Mart and Family Drug.

Continuing the garden tour ... the couple’s Wild Flower Garden is located behind the house, edging up the mountainside. Here, there are wild azaleas, trillium, dainty lilies of the valley, wild geraniums, a lentin rose that begins blooming in February, a Japanese painted fern, Euphorbia, and maiden hair fern.

Becky says she doesn’t even try to weed this part of the yard for fear she’ll pull up the flowers.

“Sometimes you gotta’ know what’s a weed and what’s not,” Charlie added.

The Andersons have been gardening for over 20 years and are very knowledgeable about the varieties of plants and flowers in their yard.

And though not as often as in the past, they are still adding new plants.  “Every now and then we’ll see something we don’t have and we’ll buy it,” Becky said.

They also give cuttings away. For the first time, they attended the Masters Gardeners Plant Swap earlier in May at the Pike County Extension Office, where they gave away some wild geraniums, cone flowers, tall grasses and cacti. (They also brought home a few plants.)

A stand-alone wooden deck behind the Andersons’ house is built into the hill, outlined by a picturesque stone wall that Becky built from stones gathered from the property. A brick patio is also attributed to Becky’s vision and hard work.  Alongside the deck grow six 15-foot-high holly bushes that were planted 20 years ago.

A frog pond is also a part of the landscape.

“It’s full of frogs!” Becky said.

The Lower Garden is the oldest on the property. Ajuga, with its purple spikes, covers much of the ground, along with white and pink bleeding hearts, lilies of the valley, day lilies, butterfly bushes, azaleas, Shasta daisies, astilbe and lamium.

Towering trees reach toward the sky — a roof of sorts — giving rise to a feeling of reverence and awe, somewhat akin to entering a cathedral. Becky says it would be a nice spot for a wedding.

The Andersons say they don’t have to work in the yard everyday ... but they do.

And you can tell it. Just take a look around.

Many of you will remember Charlie and Becky. Charlie is an old friend of mine.

No, that's not right...he WAS an old friend of mine. After Jennie sees this I will probably have to spend the next five years on my hands and knees digging holes in our yard. I may never speak to Charlie again.

Mother's Day Musings

PHOTO CAPTION CONTEST:

What is Mom thinking as she looks over the flower arrangement that Jeffery sent her for Mother's Day?

I can come up with a few possibilities...

  • Ain't it funny how these flowers from Florida look just like the ones from Kentucky that Clyde got me.

  • Ain't it funny how Jeffery Lynn got me these from all the way down there in Florida and, even though Lucille and Michelle live right here in Kentucky, I ain't got nuthin' from them yet.

  • It ain't funny but I'm starting to think that Lucille and Michelle must be one hundred percent Stalker, or maybe they are Mullins.
